Hoxton Ward

Summary of ward profile

Hoxton ward lies in the south-west corner of Hackney, just to the north of the City of London. At the time of the 2001 census its 84 hectares were home to 10,698 people. The ward forms part of the Shoreditch neighbourhood and contains a number of large social housing estates which continue to suffer high levels of deprivation – the GLA ranks it as the 25th most deprived ward in London and it is among the 20% most deprived nationally.

Hoxton has an older age profile than Hackney’s and is less ethnically diverse, with proportionately more White and fewer Asian residents than the borough average. Black groups make up the largest component of the minority communities, accounting for almost a quarter of Hackney’s people. The ward has a high number of single person households.

Social housing is even more dominant in Hoxton, accounting for around 64% of all housing tenure. House prices in the ward are significantly higher than the borough average, especially for flats.

People’s health in Hoxton is poorer than the average for Hackney. Fewer residents feel they are in good health and rates of limiting long-term illness exceed the borough
average. Despite this, the proportion of people providing unpaid care is relatively
low.

Hoxton has small shares of domestic buildings and garden space by the
borough’s standards, and a bigger one of non-domestic buildings.
However, almost a quarter of its land is public green space – principally,
Shoreditch Park.  [Hackney Council Ward Profile January 2007: Updated 2011]
